Hotels

Glossary

Hotel (H) – These are graded from one to five stars. The addition of the letters ‘GL’ alongside a five-star rating denotes a hotel of ‘Gran Lujo’ (great luxury).

Hostal (Hs) – don’t confuse this with the English word ‘hostel’. A hostal is generally a small hotel with basic facilities, although they can be fairly decent places in which to stay. They are graded from one to three stars – a three star hostal is roughly equivalent to a one star hotel.

Pension (P) – a small, often family-run establishment providing basic accommodation. These are graded with one or two stars.

Fonda (F) – similar to a pension, but these usually also have a restaurant.

Casa de Hespuedes (CH) – basic accommodation, usually with a shared bathroom, that’s of similar quality to a fonda.
