If there’s one thing that everyone knows about Ronda, it’s that it has a gorge. The tajo, as the locals call it, is a magnificent natural feature, plunging 300 feet vertically down, and dividing Ronda neatly in two. It’s as if someone had taken a cheese-wire to an old manchego cheese, and sliced it cleanly.
Segura de la Sierra Castle
The lonely castle of Segura de la Sierra looks out over the magnificent landscape of the Cazorla natural park within Jaen province. This north-eastern corner of Andalucia is wild and wonderful – and still undiscovered by the tourist hordes.
The Mezquita in Cordoba
The Mezquita (mosque) in Cordoba is one of Andalucia’s most important monuments. This magnificent example of Moorish architecture dates back to the 8th century AD, and is remarkable for its hundreds of columns topped by red-and-white horseshoe arches. A cathedral was constructed within the mosque in the 16th century.
The Baroness Thyssen Museum in Malaga
Malaga’s newest art museum is due to open on March 24 2011. The Baroness Thyssen Museum will contain works by Spanish painters including Joaquin Sorolla, Julio Romero de Torres and Francisco Zurbaran. This will be Malaga’s third major art museum alongside the CAC and the Picasso Museum.
