The winter/spring horse racing season is now under way at the Hipodromo Costa del Sol in Mijas. There are four more race meetings scheduled for between now and 13 April, including Mijas Cup Day on 4 March.
World’s ‘oldest’ cave paintings discovered in Nerja
Cave paintings recently discovered in Nerja on the Costa del Sol may be the oldest in the world, according to scientists. Initial findings suggest these rudimentary, charcoal images of seals could have been created by Neanderthals around 43,000 years ago, although there is still more research to be carried out.
Andalucia Open Golf Tournament 2012
The 2012 Andalucia Open will take place at the Aloha Golf Club near Marbella from 15 – 18 March. A host of top-class golfers are expected to compete for this year’s title, including defending champion Paul Lawrie. The tournament has a total prize fund of 1 million euros.
The Casa Museo in Mijas Pueblo
It is perhaps not surprising that Mijas Pueblo is so popular with day trippers, as it’s just a few miles inland of the resorts of Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Despite being small, this attractive whitewashed village boasts some interesting attractions, including a 17th century shrine, a quaint, oval-shaped bullring, and a rather bizarre miniatures museum. The views along the coastline are pretty good too. However, many visitors miss out on the Casa Museo de Mijas, which provides an insight into the lives of local folk before mass tourism arrived on the Costa del Sol.

Spain offers value for money in 2012
Spain offers exceptional value to money for visitors from the UK, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money survey. A basket of eight typical holiday purchases, including suntan lotion and a meal out, costs just £37.72 on the Costa del Sol, compared to £60.20 in Turkey, £69.62 in France, and a whopping £115.69 in Australia. Of the 40 destinations surveyed, only Sri Lanka (£27.95) came out cheaper than Spain.
