Michelin Star Restaurants in Andalucia

Nine Andalucia restaurants have been awarded stars in the 2012 edition of the Michelin Spain and Portugal Guide. Calima in Marbella leads the way with a 2-star rating, while Abantal, Alejandro, Aponiente, Choco, El Lago, La Costa, Santo and Skina each has one Michelin star.

Calima – Dani Garcia once again takes the plaudits for his innovative interpretations of traditional classics, created from locally sourced ingredients. As well as the great food, Calima boasts an enviable seafront location on Marbella’s Golden Mile.

Abantal – featuring contemporary Andalucian cuisine, this restaurant near Seville’s historic centre has recently been wowing the food critics. Specialities include kidney-stuffed spring chicken served with creamy rice and truffles.

Alejandro – head chef Alejandro Sanchez has worked alongside some of the country’s best-known chefs, and he has created a menu featuring well-presented dishes, with a particular emphasis on freshly cooked fish. This modern restaurant is located in the marina of Roquetas de Mar.

Aponiente – the seaside town of El Puerto de Santa Maria is home to this fish restaurant, which. Head chef Angel Leon has made a name for himself in culinary circles by including plankton in several of his dishes.

Choco – Kisko Garcia has recently returned to his home town ofCordoba after working at some ofSpain’s finest restaurants. And the young chef has not disappointed, with his new restaurant producing great-tasting dishes served up within contemporarily -styled surroundings.

La Costa – the large market town of El Ejido within Almeria’s ‘plasticultura belt’ is not a place one would normally choose to visit, but with head chef Jose Alvarez adding his creative touch to traditional Andalucian cuisine, it’s worth making an exception in order to eat at La Costa.

El Lago – a highly acclaimed restaurant that gives a new interpretation to traditional Andalucian dishes using fresh, local produce. El Lago overlooks a lake on the Greenlife Golf course nearMarbella, and there are fine views across the fairways to the sea beyond.

Santo – the arrival of celebrity chef Martin Berastegui has helped to raise the profile of this Seville restaurant, which opened in 2008. During his illustrious career Berastegui has been awarded seven Michelin stars – more than any other Spanish chef. Santo is located within the Hotel EME Catedral.

Skina – this stylish yet small restaurant in Marbella’s old town opened in 2005, and it gained a Michelin star four years later. Head chefs Daniel Rosado and Victor Trochi offer a varied menu based around the local area’s traditional cuisine.
