Spain offers exceptional value to money for visitors from the UK, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money survey. A basket of eight typical holiday purchases, including suntan lotion and a meal out, costs just £37.72 on the Costa del Sol, compared to £60.20 in Turkey, £69.62 in France, and a whopping £115.69 in Australia. Of the 40 destinations surveyed, only Sri Lanka (£27.95) came out cheaper than Spain.
The report also found that prices on the Costa del Sol are now 40% lower than five years ago, helped in part by the pound’s recent rise against the euro. With many household budgets stretched, this should come as welcome news for Spain’s tourism industry. Sarah Munro of the Post Office said: “The message that came out clearly from our research was that 2012 will be all about affordability. Holidays may still be a priority but they are not a necessity, and people will not knowingly get into debt to fund them.”
She added: “The cheaper cost of travel and the rising value of the pound will make it [Spain] a compelling choice for bargain hunters”.
